Jaw Pain

Jaw Pain? Here Are 6 Highly Possible Reasons Why

Jaw pain might be confusing. It might start off as a dull ache around the ear, pain when chewing, or feel tight when you open your mouth. Some people sense it as soon as they wake up, while others experience it after eating or conversing for a while. The jaw is used so often that even little problems can cause discomfort. Fortunately, there are usually clear reasons of jaw discomfort, many of which are easy to cure if caught early.

These six common causes of jaw pain are described.

1. Teeth Grinding or Clenching

Unknowingly, many people clench or grind their teeth, particularly when they’re sleeping. The muscles and joints of the jaw are severely strained by this behavior. Pain in the area of the cheekbones, temples, or ears results from the muscles become weary and painful over time.

Tightness while opening the mouth, worn-out teeth, and morning headaches are all indicators of grinding. Even those who are at ease can grind during night, but stress frequently exacerbates this behavior.

If there are indications of tooth wear, a dentist might recommend a night guard. This easy-to-use gadget helps to relax the jaw muscles while protecting the teeth.

2. TMJ Disorder

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the joint that joins the jaw to the skull. When this joint is malfunctioning, it might make clicking noises, hurt when chewing, or make it difficult to open the mouth completely.

Injuries, bad posture, arthritis, and prolonged grinding can all cause TMJ issues. While some people only experience discomfort on one side of their face, others experience it on both.

Depending on the reason, treatment options may include medication, splints, jaw exercises, or lifestyle modifications. When treated early, the majority of patients improve with basic treatment.

3. Dental Infections or Tooth Problems

Sometimes tooth pain spreads throughout the jaw, making it difficult to determine the true cause of the ache. A pain that spreads to the jaw region might be caused by deep cavities, abscesses, or fractured teeth.

An infection may be the cause of jaw discomfort if it is accompanied by swelling, a poor taste, fever, or pain when biting. Since these problems don’t go away on their own, dental care is necessary.

The jaw discomfort normally goes away after the dental issue is treated.

4. Sinus Issues

The sinuses are located behind the cheekbones and above the upper jaw. Pressure rises up in that area when they become inflamed as a result of an allergy or illness. Particularly in the cheekbones and upper teeth, this pressure can cause jaw discomfort.

Other symptoms of sinus-related jaw discomfort include headaches, clogged noses, and face pressure. Bending forward may exacerbate the discomfort.

The ache in the jaw normally goes away when the sinus issue is resolved.

5. Arthritis in the Jaw Joint

Arthritis affects more than only the wrists and knees. The jaw joint may also be impacted. Movement becomes painful and stiff as the joint deteriorates.

When eating, speaking, or yawning, people with jaw arthritis may experience difficulty. When moving, there could also be grinding or clicking noises.

Medication, mild exercise, and avoiding hard foods that strain the joint can all help manage jaw arthritis.

6. Injury or Muscle Strain

The jaw can be affected by any injury to the head, neck, or face. The muscles that regulate jaw movement might be strained by even little mishaps.

Long dental appointments, vigorous eating, and prolonged mouth opening can all cause muscle tension. Similar to what occurs after physical activity, the muscles may feel painful and exhausted.

This type of discomfort is frequently lessened by rest, applying warm compresses, and refraining from vigorous chewing.

When Jaw Pain Needs Medical Attention

You shouldn’t disregard jaw pain if it:

  • Extends beyond a few days.
  • Becomes bad rather than better
  • Comes with swelling or fever
  • Makes opening the mouth difficult.
  • Is connected to headaches or ear pain

Seeing a dentist or physician in these situations can assist identify the precise reason and stop more issues.
