How To Reduce Gum Pain At Home

Gum pain is one of those warning signs that people usually do not pay attention to until it gets to a point where it interferes with what you do on a daily basis. It can make eating unpleasant, brushing impossible and, sometimes the ache becomes general. The positive thinking in this case is that most gum pains are explainable and can be managed in advance before they reach severe stages. Here are some home remedies that may ease gum pain

1. Salt water rinse

This method is one of the most used and most reliable cures. Salt water brings down the swelling and removes bacteria. Add half a teaspoon of salt to warm water and rinse gently two or three times a day. 

2. Cold compress

Wrap ice in a clean cloth or paper towel and hold it over your cheek to help calm inflammation to swollen gums and give temporary relief.

3. Warm compress

Place a warm cloth on the cheek relaxes the tissues and reduces discomfort when the pain feels more like a dull ache than swelling.

4. Correct brushing technique

Try switching to a soft-bristled brush because gums respond better to gentle cleaning. Brush at a slight angle and avoid scrubbing. 

5. Flossing

Floss gently without hurting the gums to remove the food stuck between your teeth. Rinse mouth after flossing.

6. Clove oil

A tiny amount of diluted clove oil applied with a cotton swab gives temporary relief because clove has natural numbing properties. Don’t use it in excess because it can irritate the skin.

7. Aloe vera gel

Pure aloe vera gel can soothe irritated gums, ulcers or minor swelling when used in small amounts.

8. Turmeric paste

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. Mix turmeric with a little water and apply  to the gums. Leave it for a few minutes and rinse. It may have a strong taste but many people find it helpful.

9. Hydration

Dry mouth can make gum pain worse. Drinking enough water keeps the mouth moist and helps wash away bacteria and helps in getting rid of the pain.

10. Avoiding irritants

Spicy foods, hot drinks, and tobacco can irritate gums even more. Avoiding these for a few days gives the mouth a chance to heal.

When Gum Pain Needs a Dentist

Home remedies may work for mild problems, but consistent signs/pain may need professional care. These signs shouldn’t be ignored:

Gum pain that lasts more than three or four days

 

  • Bleeding that keeps returning
  • Swelling that does not go down
  • Bad breath that doesn’t improve
  • Loose teeth or a change in bite
  • Pus or a foul taste coming from the gum
